Congratulations are in order for retiring Assistant Library Director Martin J. Mata.

Mr. Mata has served the Weslaco community for the past 37 years as a library clerk, reference supervisor, computer supervisor, network administrator, and in December 2009, he was promoted to Assistant Library Director, which afforded him the opportunity to work with different boards, agencies, departments, and organizations.

Martin began working full-time for the City of Weslaco Public Library as a library clerk on May 10, 1985. His other accomplishments include attaining his bachelor’s degree in Computer Information Systems from Pan American University in December 1987 and an associate degree in Network Information Systems from Texas State Technical College in August 1998.

Mayor David Suarez and the Weslaco City Commission presented Martin with a proclamation in gratitude for his dedication to Weslaco.

Mr. Mata's family and friends were present to congratulate him. Additionally, state Representative Armando "Mando" Martinez presented Martin with a flag flown over the Texas Capitol.

During his time in Weslaco, Martin has been a leader within the local library community, and he has seen the Mayor Joe V. Sanchez Public Library grow. Through his work, the library secured a state-of-the-art computer network infrastructure, technology grants, and free public high-speed internet access, to name a few.

The city of Weslaco sends him well wishes as he enters this new and exciting chapter.
